July is Vision and Learning Month
Reduced visual acuity associated with a decline in reading efficiency
Well duh! Researchers found that a significant decline in reading efficiency was associated with reduced visual acuity. This is not the first study to demonstrate the close link between vision and learning. I’ve been an optometrist for 21 years, and I see children almost every day in my practice. I constantly remind parents of this link and recommend a yearly eye examination. School vision screenings and vision checks at the child’s pediatrician do serve a purpose; however, many cases of hyperopia (farsightedness), binocular vision problems, and accommodation problems (focusing) are missed at these screenings. Vision screenings are NOT a substitute for a complete eye health examination.
